Less friction, less wear: graphene in lubricants

Added to oils and greases, graphene can help reduce friction and protect metal surfaces, extending the life of engines and machinery.

Lubricants

Wherever metal moves against metal, friction turns energy into heat and slowly wears parts away. Lubricants are the first line of defense, and small improvements in how they perform can add up to lower energy use, longer service intervals and fewer breakdowns. Graphene is attracting attention as an additive that can help on several fronts.

Layers that slide

Graphene is made of extremely thin sheets that slide over each other easily. Dispersed in an oil or grease, these sheets can settle between moving surfaces and help keep them apart, especially under heavy loads where the oil film becomes very thin.

Protecting worn surfaces

Metal surfaces are never perfectly smooth. Under a microscope they are full of tiny peaks and valleys. Graphene can help fill and smooth these features, forming a protective film that reduces direct contact and slows further wear.

Handling heat

Friction creates heat, and heat breaks down lubricants. Because graphene conducts heat well, it can help spread heat away from hot spots, supporting more stable performance in demanding conditions.

Where it can help

Potential uses include engine oils, gear oils, industrial greases, hydraulic fluids and metalworking fluids, as well as equipment that runs at high load or low speed, where protection is hardest to maintain.

Keeping it stable

The main challenge is keeping graphene evenly suspended so it does not settle out over time. That depends on the grade of graphene, how it is treated and how it is blended. Quantanext works with lubricant blenders to choose the right material, develop stable formulations and test performance against their targets.
