Holding back rust: graphene in protective coatings
Graphene can make protective coatings tougher and better at keeping out water and oxygen, helping steel last longer in harsh places.
Corrosion is a slow, expensive problem. Bridges, pipelines, ship hulls, storage tanks and offshore platforms all depend on coatings to keep steel away from water, oxygen and salt. When a coating fails, repairs mean scaffolding, downtime and often taking an asset out of service. Making coatings last longer is one of the most practical places graphene can help.
A longer path for water and oxygen
Corrosion starts when moisture and oxygen reach the metal. In a conventional coating, they slowly work their way through tiny gaps and pores. Graphene flakes lie flat inside the coating film, overlapping like scales. Anything trying to pass through has to travel around them, which slows it down and keeps the steel underneath protected for longer.
Tougher films
Coatings also fail mechanically. Impacts, abrasion and the constant expansion and contraction of steel in sun and cold can crack a film and open a route for corrosion. Graphene reinforces the coating, helping it resist scratches and small cracks before they grow.
Thinner systems, fewer coats
Because graphene improves barrier performance, some coating systems may reach the protection they need with fewer layers or less material. That can shorten application time on site and reduce the volume of paint used, though any change to a specification has to be proven by testing.
Working with existing chemistry
Graphene is not a new type of paint. It is an additive that works inside familiar systems such as epoxies, polyurethanes and zinc rich primers. That makes it easier for coating makers to adopt, as long as it is properly dispersed and compatible with the resin.
Proving the gains
Protective coatings are judged on long term evidence: salt spray, humidity and immersion tests, and performance in the field. Quantanext works with coating manufacturers to select the right graphene, build it into their formulations and run the tests that show what it adds.
